Celebrating Black History Month
Throughout October, our family of East Midlands schools came together to celebrate Black History Month, acknowledging this year’s powerful theme Standing Firm in Power and Pride. This sparked a wide range of activities that honoured the achievements and contributions of Black individuals to British and global history.
Assemblies helped set the tone for the month, highlighting the importance of the occasion. Pupils at Brocks Hill Primary, Humphrey Perkins School and Sir Jonathan North Girls' College took part in thought-provoking sessions led by school leaders and national organisations, exploring the significance of Black History Month.
They spotlighted influential figures like poet Benjamin Zephaniah and Lord Herman Ouseley, and encouraged pupils to reflect on how they can help build a more equitable society. Brocks Hill also joined a nationwide live stream hosted by the Sanctuary Foundation, where pupils heard inspiring stories from authors and actors, followed by a lively quiz that brought the learning to life.
Creative juices were flowing at Hallam Fields Primary School, where pupils immersed themselves in the bold, expressive work of Black artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Faith Ringgold and Lorna Simpson. Inspired by these icons, children created vibrant artwork that proudly transformed school corridors into galleries of colour. Newhall Junior pupils also showcased their artistic flair, exploring the lives of iconic figures such as Rosa Parks, Barack Obama, Katherine Johnson and Walter Tull before bringing them to life on paper.
Throughout the month, pupils also explored Black history and culture through books, discussions and creative displays. They reflected on identity, justice and inclusion, learning about the Race Relations Act of 1965 and celebrating diverse voices. As part of BHM, award-winning author Radhika Sanghani visited Sir Jonathan North Girls' College to lead a workshop on writing fantasy and family fiction. She read from The Girl Who Couldn't Lie, a heartfelt, magical story featured on the 2025 BookBuzz list. Students in Years 7 and 8 chose from 16 selected titles, including Sanghani’s, receiving a free book and sparking a love for reading across the school.
This snapshot of learning in some of our schools has reinforced our commitment to celebrating diversity and promoting inclusivity, leaving a lasting impression on our young people and enabling them to become compassionate members of society.
