Historic Building Renovation Underway
Significant restoration work has begun on The Old House, a historic building located on the grounds of The Castle Rock School in Coalville. The property, which became part of Lionheart Educational Trust when the school joined us in 2022, is now undergoing an extensive transformation.
Our dedicated Estates team is working hard to breathe new life into the Grade II listed Victorian Gothic building. Previously, used as temporary classroom space for Castle Rock students, the structure has deteriorated over time. The project will see it converted into modern office and conference facilities, which will also be available for public hire once complete.
The restoration, designed to preserve the building’s architectural and historical significance, is scheduled for completion in July 2026. Key works include essential roof repairs, stonework restoration and a full refurbishment of windows and rainwater goods.
Distinctive Gothic features such as arched entrances, mullioned windows, and decorative cornices will be retained, alongside the original Charnwood granite walls and Swithland slate roof. Inside, the project will deliver structural repairs, insulation upgrades and the careful restoration of historic elements including fireplaces, plasterwork and Victorian tiled floors.
Notable features such as Tudor Revival ceilings, timber architraves and decorative ironmongery will also be preserved, showcasing the building’s 19th-century craftsmanship.
