Vocabulary
Why Vocabulary Matters
Language is the foundation of learning. Every subject has its own specialist vocabulary, and understanding these words is essential for unlocking the meaning of lessons, texts, and concepts. When pupils know and use subject-specific vocabulary confidently, they can think more deeply, explain their ideas clearly, and make stronger connections across topics. A secure grasp of key terms doesn’t just help in the classroom, it builds the academic language needed for success in exams and beyond.
Building Confidence Through Words
Learning vocabulary is more than memorising definitions; it’s about understanding how words work in context. By practising and revisiting key terms, pupils develop fluency in the language of each subject, which underpins their ability to reason, problem-solve, and engage with challenging material. Parents and carers can play a vital role by encouraging regular review and discussion of these words at home, helping to turn vocabulary into a powerful tool for learning.
Vocabulary Booklets
These vocabulary booklets contain the key words and definitions your child will encounter across all subjects this year. Knowing and using these terms confidently is essential for understanding lessons and making strong progress. We encourage pupils to review these words regularly and practise using them in sentences, quizzes, or conversations at home. Parents can help by asking their child to explain a word in their own words, use it in context, or create flashcards for quick practice. Revisiting vocabulary little and often is the best way to build long-term understanding and confidence.
You child will recieve a copy of each subject's vocabulary in their lessons, and you can download the full booklet for their year group below.
Practice Online Anytime
To make this easier, we’ve created an online vocabulary practice tool at vocab.lionhearttrust.org.uk. This platform allows pupils to review and test themselves on the essential words for each subject, using the interactive flashcards and quizzes regularly to boost long-term memory. It’s simple to use, works on any device, and is a great way for parents to support learning at home. Regular use will help pupils feel more confident and support deep learning of this key vocabulary.
